Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica, California
Bob Hope
Duration2 hours, 10 minutes
The 34th Academy Awards, honoring the best in film for 1961, were held on April 9, 1962 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica, California. They were hosted by Bob Hope; this was the seventh time Hope hosted the Oscars. For the first time in Oscar history, the show lasted longer than two hours. [1]

News and recap

The most memorable event of the night was when Stan Berman, a New York City cabdriver, awarded Bob Hope a homemade Oscar after he had slipped through security and made his way to the stage.[2] Among the many dresses worn that night, Joan Crawford wore a spaghetti strap gown with jewels she had worn at an earlier appearance at the Oscars.[3] Shirley Jones wore a strapless gown covered by ornate fabric.[4] Shirley Knight's gown used a sheer overlay to create the illusion of two layers of fabric. [5] Debbie Reynolds's black and white gown was inspired by an envelope.[6]
