Askim  is a municipality in the county of Østfold, Norway.

Askim was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt).

Askim center has 12570 inhabitants (2006). It lies next to the longest river in Norway, Glomma, and has always been a strategic point in wars due to its bridges across the river. It also has a weapons factory handily nearby.

The name

The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old farm Askim (Norse Askheimr), since the first church was built here. The first element is askr m 'ashtree', the last element is heimr m 'home, homestead, farm'.

Coat-of-arms
