Beaver Falls is a city in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located 31 miles (50 km) northwest of Pittsburgh, and on the Beaver River, six miles (9 km) from its confluence with the Ohio River. A variety of manufacturing plants had kept the residents busy in the twentieth century, however, the city has suffered a fair amount of economic malaise lately due to the decline in the steel-making capacity in the Pittsburgh region where Beaver Falls is situated.

Originally called Brighton, Beaver Falls was chartered as a borough in 1868. It adopted the commission form of government in 1913. Population counts were as follows: in 1890, 9,735; in 1900, 10,054; in 1910, 12,191; in 1920, 12,802; and in 1940, 17,098. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 9,920, with the drop in its population being attributable to its being centrally located within the Rust Belt. On May 31 1985, an F3 tornado hit just north of the city as it went across northern portions of Beaver County, as part of the eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania tornado outbreak.

The city is perhaps best known in fiction as the setting of the television situation comedy Mr. Belvedere. It is the birthplace of football player Joe Namath, Xavier head men's basketball coach Sean Miller, film maker Agent Ogden, comedian Dan Rosenberg, and model Joanie Dodds. Ernest P. Kline, Pennsylvania's lieutenant governor from 1971 to 1979, resided in the city and represented it in the Pennsylvania General Assembly from 1965 to 1971. The plates for United States paper currency are manufactured here. Geneva College is located in the College Hill neighborhood on the north side of the city. The world's first recorded college basketball game occurred in the city on April 8, 1893 when a team from Geneva College defeated the New Brighton YMCA.

Beaver Falls is located at (40.758865, -80.319737)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.9 km² (2.3 mi²). 5.5 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (7.02%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 9,920 people, 3,798 households, and 2,259 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,806.7/km² (4,681.6/mi²). There are 4,380 housing units at an average density of 797.7/km² (2,067.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 78.82% White, 17.53% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 2.37% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.06% of the population.

There were 3,798 households out of which 26.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.6% were married couples living together, 19.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.5% were non-families. 35.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 9.00.

In the city the population was spread out with 21.9% under the age of 18, 16.7% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 84.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $26,344, and the median income for a family was $30,405. Males had a median income of $31,151 versus $22,243 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,808. About 19.8% of families and 22.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 29.8% of those under age 18 and 12.4% of those age 65 or over.
