Carterton, New Zealand

Information about Carterton, New Zealand

Carterton is a small town in the Wellington region of New Zealand. It lies in a farming area of the Wairarapa in New Zealand's North Island. It is located 14 kilometres southwest of Masterton and 9 km north of Greytown. Its population in 2001 was 4014, with a further 2800 living in the surrounding rural district.

Founded in 1857, the town was originally known as Three Mile Bush, and served as housing for workers building the road between Wellington, New Zealand and Masterton. It was later renamed after Charles Rooking Carter. The town describes itself as New Zealand's daffodil capital.

In 1880, the Wairarapa Line railway was opened to Carterton. Trains between Carterton and Wellington had to travel over the steep and torturous Rimutaka Incline until it was replaced by the Rimutaka Tunnel in 1955. Currently, the only regular passenger service to stop at Carterton Railway Station is the Wairarapa Connection that operates multiple times daily between Wellington and Masterton.

Carterton claimed to be the first place in the world with a transsexual mayor, Georgina Beyer. Georgina went on to become the MP for Wairarapa.

Carterton was the birthplace of Sir Bob Charles, the first left-handed golfer to win a Major, the British Open in 1962.
