Chalandri (Greek, Modern: Χαλάνδρι, Ancient/Katharevousa: Χαλάνδριον), older form Chalandrion and in Ancient Greek Flya (Φλύα) is a northern suburb in Athens, Greece. It is the birthplace of Euripides.

History

See also:

Chalandri is a suburb in Northern Athens, around 10 km from the centre; its location corresponds with one of the 10 ancient Dimoi (boroughs) of Athens, known Flya (Greek: Φλύα). Until 40 years ago, it was a small village in Attica. With the rapid expansion of Athens and of this village during the 60s and 70s, the two eventually met, and the border with Athens is now indistinguishable. The area, nevertheless, remains relatively sparsely populated, and has one of the highest ratio of open green areas per citizen in Athens.

Culture

Chalandri houses a large number of schools from public to private schools, lyceums, gymnasia (secondary school), churches, a post office, supermarkets, banks, a sporting club, Chalandri AC and squares (plateies), shopping malls, and the Greek Mint. Halandri is also home to various embassies from across the world.
