Detroit rock
Information about Detroit rock
Detroit rock is the name for a style of Australian indie rock, particularly popular in Sydney, Australia in the 1980s. The name comes from the city of Detroit in the United States, which was home to the heavy metal and garage rock sound of Alice Cooper, The Stooges and MC5. These bands were among the strongest influences on Sydney indie bands in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The style was popularised and also heavily influenced by Radio Birdman, who formed in Sydney but were led by Deniz Tek, a Detroit native.
The British Invasion was the term applied by media - and subsequently by consumers - to the influx of rock and roll, beat and pop performers from the United Kingdom who became popular in the United States, Australia & Canada.
