Dodge County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. It was created on October 26, 1870. As of 2000, the population was 19,171. The 2005 Census Estimate shows a population of 19,574 [1]. The county seat is Eastman, Georgia6.

History

The county was named for William Earl Dodge, an U. S. representative from New York and earlier a supporter of peace before the breakout of the American Civil War.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,303 km² (503 mi²). 1,296 km² (500 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it (0.57%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2005, there were 19,574 people, 7,062 households, and 4,886 families residing in the county. The population density was 15/km² (38/mi²). There were 8,186 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 68.95% White, 29.40% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.76% from other races, and 0.46% from two or more races. 1.29% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 7,062 households out of which 32.20% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.00% were married couples living together, 15.20% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.80% were non-families. 27.80% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.60% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the county the population was spread out with 26.00% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 29.50% from 25 to 44, 22.60% from 45 to 64, and 13.20% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 105.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $27,607, and the median income for a family was $34,718. Males had a median income of $27,150 versus $20,683 for females. The per capita income for the county was $14,468. About 13.80% of families and 17.40% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.40% of those under age 18 and 21.30% of those age 65 or over.
