History
Franklin County was created in 1832. It was named for Benjamin Franklin, famous scientist, printer, and author.Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,687 km² (1,037 mi²). 1,410 km² (544 mi²) of it is land and 1,277 km² (493 mi²) of it (47.53%) is water.The extreme eastern tip of the county is bordered by the Ochlockonee River.

Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 11,057 people, 4,096 households, and 2,727 families residing in the county. The population density was 8/km² (20/mi²). There were 7,180 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 81.24% White, 16.32% Black or African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. 2.42% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.There were 4,096 households out of which 24.80% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.50% were married couples] living together, 9.80% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.40% were non-families. 28.70% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.80% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.77.
In the county the population was spread out with 18.00% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 30.80% from 25 to 44, 27.80% from 45 to 64, and 15.70% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 129.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 135.70 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $26,756, and the median income for a family was $31,157. Males had a median income of $25,101 versus $20,494 for females. The per capita income for the county was $16,140. About 11.80% of families and 17.70% of the population were below the poverty line, including 23.20% of those under age 18 and 13.90% of those age 65 or over.
