K-9 (TV series)
Information about K-9 (TV series)
For the Doctor Who character, see .
K-9 is a forthcoming Australian 26-part comedy/adventure series focusing on the adventures of the robot dog K-9, done in a mixture of computer animation and live action.
K-9 first appeared in the 1977 Doctor Who serial The Invisible Enemy and was a companion of the Fourth Doctor from 1977 to 1981, reappearing in 2006 for the episode "School Reunion". A previous attempt at a Doctor Who spin-off, 1981's K-9 and Company, did not go to series after its pilot episode. K-9 appeared briefly in the 2007 pilot of The Sarah Jane Adventures, "Invasion of the Bane".
Each episode of K-9 will be 30 minutes long, made by Jetix Europe and London-based distribution outfit Park Entertainment. The project is being overseen by K-9's co-creator Bob Baker,[1][2] who is also writing the series.[3] The series will be produced by Penny Wall and Richard Stewart of Stewart & Wall Entertainment Pty Ltd, and Simon Barnes.[3] The executive producers are Grant Bradley of Daybreak Pacific and Jim Howell.[4]
According to a report in Broadcast magazine, the BBC opted out of involvement in order to focus on their own Doctor Who spin-off, Torchwood. BBC-owned characters like the Doctor will not appear in the series, due to rights considerations.[5] A broadcast date for the series has not been officially announced, but a July 2008 debut is planned.[6]<ref name="telegraph" />[7]
The programme will be set in outer space, and Jetix is planning a range of interactive toys to accompany the series. A promotional blurb on Park Entertainment's website says that the main setting will be the Platte, "an old Prairie-class spacecraft" once used for asteroid colonisation. In addition to K-9, the characters will include Slocum, a thirty something "space gypsy" and Djinn, "an overactive computer module in the shape of an attractive young woman".[8]
The design of K-9 is radically different from that seen in Doctor Who, as indicated by the publicity image seen at right.
In July 2007 it was confirmed that the Australian Film Finance Corporation had approved funding for the series, and that the programme had been pre-sold to Network Ten.[3] The Pacific Film and Television Commission (PFTC) will also provide additional financing.[9]
