KARD

Information about KARD

A kard is a type of Islamic knife found in Turkey, Armenia, Persia, and all the way to India. Mostly used in the 18th century and before, it has a straight single edged blade and is usually no longer than 16 inches in length. It has no guard, and usually the handle was bone, ivory, or horn. It was mostly a stabbing weapon, and commonly the point would be reinforced to penetrate chain mail. A major characteristic of a kard is that the hilt is only partially covered by the sheath.

KARD-TV, Channel 14, is the Fox affiliate for the El Dorado, Arkansas/Monroe, Louisiana market area. KARD's transmitter is located in Columbia, Louisiana. The station is licensed to West Monroe, Louisiana.

The station first began broadcasting in 1974 as KLAA-TV, an ABC affiliate. Before 1974, ABC programs were split between CBS affiliate KNOE-TV and NBC affiliate KTVE. It changed its calls to KARD in 1982. In 1994 it dumped ABC to become a Fox affiliate. This left the Monroe market without an ABC affiliate until December 1998, when KAQY signed on. Between then, ABC programming was available on local cable systems via Alexandria's KLAX and Shreveport's KTBS, though cable systems on the fringe of either signal carried WXYZ-TV in Detroit or KMGH-TV in Denver.

In 2002, Piedmont Television, owner of KTVE, took over KARD's operations under a local marketing agreement. However, the two stations' operations were consolidated in KARD's former studio in West Monroe. In addition to a common sales and promotions staff, the KTVE news department produces KARD's newscast. Piedmont's control of the duopoly will come to an end sometime later in 2007, as KTVE is being sold to Mission Broadcasting. This means that the owner of KARD, Nexstar Broadcasting Group, will take over control of the two stations under a local sales agreement (LSA) once Mission Broadcasting's acquisition of KTVE is finalized.

The station no longer has a separate website. Its old address, kard.com, redirects to KTVE's website.

In addition to FOX programming, KARD-TV airs syndicated programs such as the Tyra Banks Show, The People's Court, Judge Mathis, Judge Alex and Friends. The station also airs Southeastern Conference football games produced by Lincoln Financial Sports.
