Kaurwaki

Kaurwaki is a character in the legend of Indian emperor, Ashoka, set in the 3rd century BC. It is said she was a fisherwoman and later on became one of Ashoka's wives. She converted to Buddhism and became Ashoka's 3rd wife. She was immortalised in the Queen Edict (one of Ashoka's many edicts carved on pillars throughout his kingdom).

In the film Asoka, Kaurwaki is the adopted daughter of the king of Kalinga. She meets Ashoka (who is traveling under the pseudonym "Pawan") in the jungle during his exile and falls in love with him. Fate separates them, and while Ashoka believes she has died, Kaurwaki goes back to Kalinga. Later, she mobilizes peasants and women to fight against Ashoka. However, she does not know that Asoka is in fact her lost love, Pawan.
