President of Latvia is head of state and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces of Republic of Latvia. Each president to the day, but Gustavs Zemgals, has served two terms, the term of office is four years, before 1997 - three years. In event of absence of President Speaker of Saeima assumes the duties of the President, for example after restoration of independence of Latvia Anatolijs Gorbunovs was acting president.
