Malazgirt

Malazgirt (formerly also called (Armenian: Մանզիկերտ Manzikert) and also Malâzgird) is a town in Muş Province, eastern Turkey, with a population of 23,697 (year 2000).

Manzikert was an important trading post of the ancient Kingdom of Armenia and then of the Byzantine Empire. In 1054, the Seljuk Turks made an attempt to capture the city, but were repulsed by Basil Apocapes, the Byzantine general of Armeno-Georgian origin.

The Battle of Manzikert was fought near Manzikert in August of 1071. In one of the worst defeats in the Byzantine Empire's history, Emperor Romanus Diogenes was defeated and captured by the Seljuk sultan Alp Arslan. The victory by the Turks led ultimately to Anatolia's becoming the heartland of the Ottoman Empire.
