Southwestern Christian College
Information about Southwestern Christian College
Southwestern Christian College ("SwCC") is a Historically Black colleges and universities / historically black college in Terrell, Texas 30 miles east of Dallas. SwCC is operated by members of the Churches of Christ, making it the sole extant institution of its kind. SwCC is primarily a junior college which offers Associate and Bachelor degrees. Two years of study in most fields are offered outside of those involving preparation for full-time ministry. A few more junior- and senior-level courses have been offered in fairly recent years, which eventually lead to the school's first Bachelor Degree graduates in 1984 and on-line courses at the present. A concerted effort has been made by the Board of Trustees not to allow the college's somewhat-limited resources to be spread too thinly. Southwestern's junior college graduates typically earn the Associate of Arts and Science degrees, and have a much higher than average success rate upon transfer to four-year institutions, whether historically black or not, than is typical of junior college graduates or college students as a whole. The college is currently headed by respected and highly renowned black educator and minister Dr. Jack Evans, Sr. SwCC was founded in 1948 by educator and minister, G.P. Bowser. SwCC became fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1973. Alumni from the first years to the present can be found throughout out the world in various walks of life from various countries and cultures.
